How to Prevent Kitchen Fires

Cooking can be fun, but it can also be dangerous. You have to remember that you are dealing with temperatures often well over 350 degrees, boiling water and sometimes even open flames. So safety is of the utmost importance for both you and your family.

This article from eHow.com outlines several ways you can prevent kitchen fires.

1.   Stay in the kitchen when cooking. This is the number one cause of cooking fires. Always watch over your food and stay close to the stove when cooking, it only takes a few seconds for spatters of grease or other items to catch fire.

2.   Turn panhandles inward on the stove to keep from spilling food onto the burner or causing severe burns if spilled on someone.

3.   Do not wear loose clothing it can catch fire. Wear short sleeved or tight fitting sleeves when cooking and reaching over burners and pans on the stove.

4.   Clean up your cooking area. If food or grease builds up this can be a fire hazard as well.

5.   Keep window curtains, dishtowels or potholders away from any cooking heat source. Be sure to keep flammable cleaners away from the kitchen and do not keep kerosene or gasoline inside the house.

6.   If children are in the kitchen, watch them closely. When they are old enough and ready to help with the cooking, teach them how to cook safely too.

7.   Do not keep a fryer on a table with a cord running to a plug in. If a child or animal doesn’t see it then they can be badly burned and it can cause a kitchen fire as well.
